The Glorious Motivation and the Reasonable Response
What truly motivates us to live a life of obedience to God? Romans 12:1 reminds us that our response to Him begins with His mercies. Through Romans 1–11, we see the depth of our sin and our inability to save ourselves, yet God, in His grace, sent Jesus Christ to live the righteous life we could not live, bear the penalty for our sins, and give us righteousness, new life, freedom from sin’s dominion, and the sure hope of His everlasting love. In light of these mercies, Christian obedience is not about earning God’s favor or merely trying to be a good person—it is the reasonable response of a heart overwhelmed by His goodness. As we grow in awe of who God is and what He has done for us, worship fuels our obedience, leading us to present our whole selves as living sacrifices, set apart for His purposes. Our actions, words, thoughts, relationships, resources, plans, and daily choices belong to Him. We do not surrender because we have to earn His love; we surrender because, in Christ, we have received mercy beyond measure.
