For Christian wives, Peter points to a submission that displays the beauty of Christ through godly conduct, Christlike character, and courageous obedience. This beauty is not primarily outward, but is seen in a gentle and quiet spirit, respectful and pure conduct, and a heart that hopes in God and continues to do what is good even when obedience is costly or frightening. Ultimately, we can live this way not by simply trying harder, but because Christ Himself suffered for us, bore our sins, and calls us to follow His example. Our hope is not in our ability to control our circumstances, but in Christ, who has already given us grace and secured our hope.
